Must be food you don't have to refrigerate. This is a huge topic and varies highly depending on what type of camping you're doing and how you plot to cook it.-Tang. Tang was invented by the mountain gods to perfectly remove the nasty taste of iodine-treated water. Sleeping stuff:-Tent-Sleeping pad. A must. Foam or inflatable. Well loved brand is Thermarest.-Sleeping bag. These are rated for different temperatures. It's better to be too warm than too cold.Clothes/Frills:Avoid cotton as much as possible. Cotton can be a disaster for a million reasons in the backcountry.-Flashlight/Headlamp, lamps/lanterns are nice to have also.-Beanie hat (wool or fleece)-Warm fleece jacket-Long pants (synthetic)-Preferably non-cotton (polyester/synthetic) shirts, shorts, socks, long underwear.-Raingear (pants and jacket or poncho, depending on how far from your tent you plot to go)-Excellent hiking boots.-Gloves depending on weatherComfort stuff:-Toilet paper and tiny trowel (scoop)-Pillow of some sort. Experienced campers don't bring them but it's hard enough to sleep through the night in a sleeping bag if you've never done it before and a rolled up jacket just doesn't always cut it.-Sunscreen (essential)-Bug repellant (can be essential)-Lip balm-Bandana. Covers your neck on long hot days, doubles as hanky.-SunglassesOther:-Some sort of minimum first-aid stuff.-Emergency whistles are also excellent to have.-Many campsites these days are within cellphone array excellent to keep one with you just in case.-Camera!-Tiny thermometers are fun because you can later brag about how cold it got at night.Common Sense. Don't forget it. If you're going out where you can get lost bring a map and compass. If you're in bear people you need to research the de rigueur precautions.
